Welcome address by the National President.

When it is time, it is time.

Hello, fellow meteorological professionals of Nigeria; distinguished colleagues of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET). I sincerely thank you for giving me the privilege to serve you as the interim National president of our noble Association of Meteorological Professionals of Nigeria (AMPON).

Other members of this interim national executive cabinet also send their profound gratitude. Knowing that AMPON members are found across diverse industries like Aviation, Agriculture, Marine, Telecommunication, Sports, and Petroleum, including the Military to mention a few. Our administration shall serve all members with equality and fairness.

However, we acknowledge that NiMET is the lead agency in the practice of Meteorology in Nigeria, and we shall serve our members in NiMET with all humility without any form of familiarization. It is time to serve, and shall not serve on our terms, we shall serve according to the AMPON laydown aims and objectives as it is written in her constitution. According to the AMPON constitution, we shall support our members in their journey of articles, research, journals, and publication as they embark on such projects. Still, in the spirit of the AMPON constitution, as provided, our administration shall be committed to:

  1. Providing a lasting agreement with the meteorological employers for the remuneration of our WMO certificate.
  2. Establish a working relationship/partnership with all relevant sectors in government and the private sector in Nigeria. Including International meteorological organizations across Europe and America.
  3. Breed Nigeria's future meteorologists through our mentoring programs both in government and private secondary schools in Nigeria. This program is called Project Catch Young Meteorologist (ProCYM).
  4. A structural continuous revenue/fund generation system for the running of AMPON.
  5. An aggressive general public sensitization program on the importance of weather reports to human health, business, and other day-to-day activities. This program is called Project Weather and Me (ProWAM)

Our service shall also include special intervention demands of our members from their employers so that they will not be disenfranchised in any form. Since NiMET is the lead agency in the practice of meteorology in Nigeria, we hereby appeal that NiMET members of staff that are eligible to become a member of AMPON should kindly register with us and give their relentless support and selfless commitment to the actualization of the AMPON mandate. Because it is time for meteorologist in Nigeria to start living a better life. Yes, it is time.

We shall be organizing our first AMPON national exhibition, convention, and election in the presence of partners in all sectors and international organizations in Nigeria and across the globe come January 26 and 27, 2024. Therefore, those who will be interested in becoming an aspirant in any position as will be announced by the organizing committee are advised to start putting their manifestos together and work towards increasing their chances of winning.

By the grace of the Almighty God, Nigeria is going to be the foremost black nation in the practice of Meteorology. We have competent hands, we have the certifications; we are willing; and most importantly, we are ready. Now is the time for Nigerian Meteorologists to start living a better life. When it is time, it is time.

God bless you, God bless AMPON God bless the federal republic of Nigeria.

Thank you
Osarenren Sylvester
