History of the Association of Meteorological Professionals of Nigeria (AMPON)

The Association of Meteorological Professionals of Nigeria (AMPON) was established in 2018 by a group of visionary meteorological experts who recognized the need for a unified platform for collaboration, professional development, and knowledge exchange within Nigeria’s meteorological community. The founding members—Mr. Ogunjobi O. Temitope, Mr. Akubo Ben, Mr. Suleiman Musa, Mr. Banki Jonathan, Mr. Isa Ngoba, and the late Mr. Itaketo Ubong of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet)—laid the solid foundation upon which the Association stands today. AMPON was formally registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in 2019.

From inception, the core mission of AMPON has been to promote professional growth, foster unity among meteorologists across various institutions, and provide a credible voice for the concerns and aspirations of practitioners in the field. Over time, the Association has grown significantly, attracting members from diverse sectors such as Aviation, Agriculture, Military, Oil & Gas, Research, Environment, and other climate-related industries.

A major strategic priority of AMPON is the development of a rigorous and globally respected certification program. This program is designed to become the benchmark for excellence in meteorological practice in Nigeria, assessing members on their skills, knowledge, and experience. Through this initiative, professionals will gain a recognized pathway to demonstrate competence and build trust with peers, employers, and the public.

AMPON is also committed to advocating for fair remuneration and recognition of certified professionals across all sectors. In addition, the Association celebrates individuals—men and women—whose contributions have significantly advanced meteorology and atmospheric sciences in Nigeria.

To support continuous learning, AMPON has increasingly expanded its portfolio of training and development programs. These include workshops, conferences, capacity-building sessions, and online courses tailored to emerging trends and innovations in meteorology. The Association is also active in public policy engagements, contributing to national discussions and regulatory frameworks that shape meteorological practice and the broader environmental landscape in Nigeria.

In 2021, a volunteer committee representing Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones came together to strengthen the organizational structure of AMPON. This effort led to the election of an Interim Executive Council in 2023, tasked with guiding the Association and preparing for its first national election to establish substantive leadership.

The Interim Executive Council consists of:

  • Mr. Ogunjobi O. Temitope – Secretary General
  • Mr. Ridwan Bashir – National President
  • Mr. Akpoke Victor – Deputy Secretary General
  • Mr. Isah Abdullahi – National Treasurer
  • Mr. Fasasi Jide Mutiu – Deputy National Treasurer
  • Mr. Gandi Tijjani Ibrahim – Public Relations Officer
  • Mr. Daniel Zecharia – Deputy Public Relations Officer

Today, AMPON stands as a dynamic and rapidly growing professional body, boasting a membership of over 354 professionals across 10 organizations in various sectors nationwide. Through its steadfast dedication to excellence, professional development, and advocacy, AMPON has earned recognition as one of the most influential professional associations in Nigeria.
