Our programmes

Meteorology that reaches classrooms and communities

From mentoring the next generation of forecasters to certifying the professionals who serve today, our programmes put weather and climate science to work for Nigeria.

Education

Project Catch Young Meteorologists (ProCYM)

Sensitising, introducing and nurturing Nigerian secondary school students in science — especially the atmospheric physics of meteorology.

ProCYM brings practising meteorologists into government and private secondary schools to mentor students, run hands-on science activities and open their eyes to careers in weather and climate. Every outreach is designed by a team of practising scientists and educators with one purpose in mind: to combine fun and fascination with quality learning.

  • School visits and mentoring by practising meteorologists
  • Hands-on activities with weather instruments
  • Career guidance into meteorology and the physical sciences
  • Climate literacy and Green Earth tree planting

Public awareness

Project Weather and Me (ProWAM)

A public sensitisation programme on how our health, businesses and daily lives depend on weather information.

Without accurate weather information, decisions about planting, travel, events and business operations become risky — and can lead to substantial losses. ProWAM helps people understand forecasts and warnings, and take the right action to protect their health, property and livelihoods.

  • Community, market and media campaigns
  • Understanding forecasts, alerts and seasonal outlooks
  • Weather, health and safety guidance
  • Climate-smart decisions for farmers and businesses

Professional standards

AMPON Certification

A rigorous, globally respected benchmark for excellence in meteorological practice in Nigeria.

Our certification programme serves the public’s need to identify broadcast and consulting meteorologists who communicate complex weather, water and climate information with competence — as well as educators raising scientific literacy. It assesses skills, knowledge and experience, giving professionals a recognised pathway to demonstrate competence, and AMPON advocates for fair remuneration of certified professionals across all sectors.

  • Assessment of skills, knowledge and experience
  • Recognition for broadcast, consulting and operational meteorologists
  • Membership certificates for registered members
  • Advocacy for fair remuneration of WMO-certified staff
